Track Systems for Healthy, Happy Horses

A track system encourages horses to live more like they would in the wild.

A track system uses an internal fence line, creating a “track” around the perimeter of a paddock. Typically between 2–4.5 metres wide, it encourages horses to move more, interact socially, graze selectively, and exercise naturally across varied terrain.

At Tranquil Island, our track system allows horses to live freely and instinctively — promoting stronger hooves, better fitness, healthier digestion, and calmer minds.

Movement creates health — in body, mind, and spirit.

Horses on tracks have constant access to enrichment, exercise, and companionship. They’re less prone to boredom, metabolic issues, and behavioural problems common in small paddocks.

Tracks help preserve pasture, protect wet areas, and create a living environment closer to what horses are naturally adapted for — leading to healthier, happier lives.

You don’t need a huge property to get started.

Faith’s approach to track building is practical and flexible. Start simple:

  • Add an interior fence line (use electric tape if needed for easy shaping).

  • Avoid dead ends or sharp corners.

  • Keep feeding stations close to the house for efficiency.

  • Use enrichment like different footing materials (gravel, sand, logs).

  • Create herb gardens or plant native trees for natural foraging.

  • Design gates to allow easy flow without trapping horses.
Even a few simple changes can dramatically transform your horses’ daily lives.
